What is Legionnaires Disease?

Legionnaires' Disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by a bacteria that contaminates water supplies. It can be fatal.

Where is it?

The bacteria comes from natural sources and is found in water from rivers and ponds to building's water systems.

Do I need to take action?

Where staff, contractors or the general public are in contact with water in your building, especially if it is in spray form (shower taps), then you will more than likely need to have a policy in place.

Legal Duties.

The Health and Safety at work Act 1974 and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations all apply. The HSE are a good source of information and the 'L8' book is also a good source of information.
